Opinion Letter
#13: On the upcoming IWIL conference!
I’m very happy to be sharing everything I know about staying calm under pressure, …
#12: On Xmas cards and life
I was writing Christmas cards yesterday (well, new year’s cards as they will definitely not be making it to anyone’s mailbox in time for Christmas) and thinking about what I wish for my friends and family in 2022.
#11: On “winging it”
Everybody is just winging it. I was recently reminded of this very important truth.
#10: On taking action
In self-care as in other fields, actions speak louder than words (though words do matter as well). So what do your actions say about you and how important you consider your well-being to be?
#9: On managing myself (a bit) better
It recently dawned on me that we receive little training on being human
#8: On doing the little things
Improving my well-being would require drastic changes to my daily routine. I’m too busy/too tired/too weak (insert your own) to make those changes. Therefore, I give up (before I even start). Does that sound familiar?
#7: On never “being off”
Do you ever feel like you are “never off”? If that’s the case, you’re not alone.
#6: On why I didn’t always love yoga
Full disclaimer: I didn’t always love yoga. I took my first yoga class when I was 20 and simply didn’t see the point of it. I had barely even moved!
#5: On touching your toes
Yoga is often seen as a purely physical practice that requires extraordinary amounts of flexibility and strength. That understandably puts a lot of people off.
#4: On the Women in Law Initiative conference
The Women In Law conference was a first for me:
#3: On Lawyer Well-Being.
Lawyer well-being. Some people might think this is an oxymoron. If you look at studies measuring lawyers’ mental health, in particular a 2016 study of more than 13,000 lawyers across the US, you’d be tempted to agree. The numbers are not good.
#2: On new year’s resolutions
I am a bit ambivalent about new year’s resolutions. The kind of resolutions we make are ultimately not so helpful. It shouldn’t be what we need to change about ourselves in order to become “better version of ourselves” but rather how we can grow.
#1: Don’t let your voice-over take control of your life
Our thoughts can easily distract us from what we are doing. It’s like a little voice whispering in our head all the time. The little voice will never disappear entirely but you can increase your awareness and thus manage it better.
